Season 1 was first released on Netflix in December 2019, subsequent seasons in November 2020, and season 3 in July 2021.
Has Netflix Renewed Virgin River for Season 4?
On September 20, Netflix confirmed to USAToday that season 4 would continue, and not only that, the series will also return in season 5 on Netflix. It’s rare for Netflix to order multiple seasons, but it’s a testament to the series’ popularity.
Of course, we were talking about Virgin River season 4 long before the official renewal was announced.
In early 2021, we reported that a fourth season of the series had been announced in several production announcements. Even better, we learned that filming for season 4 would begin in late July 2021.
The show will be filmed exclusively in Vancouver, Canada.
Lauren Morris of RadioTimes interviewed Tim Matheson, who plays Vernon Doc. This interview took place right after the season 3 premiere, which confirmed our reports that filming would begin “any day now.”
Thanks to a Watershed Grill post on Instagram, we also learned that filming would take place between August 17 and 18, 2021 (and several times after that). Watershed Grill serves as the host location for Jack’s Bar in the Virgin River. Additional filming took place at Watershed Grill between August 30 and September 2.
Filming is currently scheduled to begin on November 30, 2021.
A quick renewal shouldn’t come as a big surprise to those who follow the series. Both seasons 2 and 3 were renewed before debuting on Netflix. This was particularly the case with season 3, which was filmed simultaneously as the release of season 2.
The Top 10 data also shows that Virgin River is a big hit for Netflix. However, the streaming service has never released official figures.
Since Top 10 was introduced, the show has been on Top 10 for 75 days. In its third season, the series was #1 in the U.S. for just two weeks and eventually dropped out of the Top 10 after more than a month.
In the Nielsen Top 10, the series also held the top spot between July 12 and July 18 with 2.109 million minutes of airtime, beating out Manifest (on Netflix) and Loki (on Disney+).
What to expect from Virgin River season 4
Mel’s big storyline at the beginning of season 4 is that she is pregnant, though the birth father is unknown. Presumably, it will be announced at the end of season 4.
Brady’s future seems to be in jeopardy, as he was arrested for shooting Jack at the end of season 2.
Hope is expected to return in season 4, but it is not yet known in what form. She was absent for most of Season 3 (mostly because she wasn’t allowed to return), but we’ve learned that she visited her aunt in another state. On her return, however, she was hospitalized after an accident in the storm on her way back to Virgin River.
When will season 4 of Virgin River be on Netflix?
With filming happening so soon, we shouldn’t have to wait that long for the new season.
So don’t expect season 4 to be released in 2021. Still, we hope Virgin River season 4 to return in 2022 and probably air in the second quarter of 2022 (between April and July 2022).
Will there be a season 6 of Virgin River?
It’s too early to talk about it, but there are some indications that the show may continue beyond the announced fifth season.
Before the announcement, showrunner Sue Tenney hinted to Us Weekly that “we want to do as many seasons as possible.” There’s a mountain of source material to deal with in future seasons, so the door is wide open.
