The leader of the Fast and Furious family wants one of his protagonists to return one last time.
In an Instagram post, actor Vin Diesel personally invited Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to reprise his role as Luke Hobbs for Fast and Furious 10, the first half of the two-part franchise finale. Diesel’s email began with the words, “My little brother Dwayne… the time has come.
The world awaits the finale of Fast 10. “Diesel went on to explain how special Johnson is to his children, what it means to the franchise, and a promise Diesel made to Johnson years ago,” I say it out of love. But you have to imagine, don’t let the franchise stand still; you have a vital role to play,” he wrote. Others cannot play Hobbs.
Diesel’s post appears to be the actor’s attempt to end his long feud with The Rock. Over the summer, Johnson said he was done with Fast and Furious after a series of verbal beatings were publicly exchanged between him and Diesel.
These issues can be traced to issues that arose on the Fate of the Furious set, where Diesel was tough on Johnson as the film’s producer. This led Johnson to indirectly call Diesel on social media and criticize an anonymous opponent as “candy,” who later turned out to be Diesel. Many crew members shared this view and personally thanked Johnson for raising his concerns in a public forum.
Johnson first joined the Fast and Furious franchise for the fifth film, aptly titled Fast Five. With its star rating, the film earned over $416 million, the highest value in the series at the time. Then, in the subsequent three sequels and its spin-off titled Hobbs & Shaw, it became the first fast-paced movie since 2003 to leave Diesel.
Johnson doesn’t seem interested in a return to mainstream cinema. Still, he had his idea for a sequel to Universal Pictures’ Hobbs & Shaw, which he says is the show’s “counterpart.”
With more than ten films, an animated TV series, and multiple attractions in the theme park, Fast and Furious is one of the best feature films ever. Earlier, actor Sung Kang, who played Han Lue in six films, said the series could become a hit because the people who make the movie don’t take themselves too seriously. “It’s still entertainment. If we can laugh at ourselves and then joke in the movie, it’s a family thing,” he said. “The audience knows that the directors are listening to them.”
As Kang mentions, the family is an integral part of Fast and Furious, as Diesel reiterates in his testimonial. Like his character, Dominic Toretto knows all too well, families quarrel and disagree from time to time. It remains to be seen whether Diesel and Johnson can make things right, but Fast and Furious 10 will be out on April 7, 2023.
