According to Red Notice Rawson director Marshall Thurber, Ryan Reynolds sent him a topless photo of Golden Girls star Bea Arthur to confirm he wanted to be a part of the Netflix action-comedy.
Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot signed up for the Red Notice based on Thurber’s speech, but the writer/director wasn’t sure if Reynolds would join him until he began writing the script. “So the role of Nolan Booth, Ryan was my first and only choice – that’s what I want, so I’m writing and I’m in a rush,” Thurber told Deadline. “So I sent him the manuscript, crossed my fingers and sent a quick note because we’ve known each other for a while that said, ‘Look, I wrote you the best part of this manuscript, even if you’re Canadian. I hope you like it. If you want, no need to call back, send me a topless photo of Bea Arthur and I know you’re there.'”
Thurber continued when he woke up the next morning and checked his cell phone: “The first thing I saw was a text from Ryan with a topless photo of Bea Arthur. So he loved the script and brought so much with him “. for the role of the team and the day “.
It should be noted that Reynolds’ character of Deadpool has a whimsical appeal to the Golden Girls star. Wade Wilson wears a t-shirt with Arthur’s face in the first movie, while “Bea” and “Arthur” are engraved on Deadpool’s katana in Deadpool 2.
The Red Notice concerns FBI profile John Hartley (Johnson), who reluctantly teams up with art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) to catch a more infamous art thief: Sarah Black, also known as “The Bishop” (Gadot). The hunt leads to a cat and mouse globetrotter game with twists and turns, double-crosses, and an ancient Egyptian treasure hunt.
While Red Notice features a lot of exaggerated sets, Thurber explained how COVID-19 led to a complete overhaul of one of the film’s key action sequences. In March 2020, Red Notice halted production just days before the opening sequence for the film, a massive car chase in Italy, was prepared for filming. Thurber had to rewrite the opening when production resumed six months later with the new health and safety protocols to avoid a lawsuit. “I think it worked better for the movie at the end,” he said.
