Everyone expects Matrix Resurrections to have a healthy dose of explosive and fluid action sequences. Still, according to Keanu Reeves, there can be more fun elements than fans can imagine.
In an interview with EW, Reeves noticed the new tone in the fourth part and was “struck by the amount of humor,” but made it clear that this would not lead to a tumult of laughter. Reeves said, “It’s the Matrix Challenge again; it’s incredibly smart, smart, fun, exciting and fun.”
Although The Matrix is not known for its humor, co-author David Mitchell said that Matrix Resurrections are not regular. The story changes with new cast members like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II playing a younger version of Morpheus and Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, and Neil Patrick Harris. Mitchell also said it is a strange invention that undermines blockbuster rules and reiterated that viewers could expect more risk.
Fans of the matrix will remember that older movies were not entirely straightforward. For example, the falling green code, known as the Matrix franchise, actually has a message, and it’s not as philosophical as one might assume (spoiler: here are just sushi recipes). Some scenes from previous films have found their way into popular culture. For example, the “red pill / blue pill” concept got a meme treatment. The “I know Kung Fu” line was intertwined with people like SNL when Tobey Maguire introduced Spider-Man to Neo.
A picture from the first Matrix Resurrections trailer shows the melancholy of “Neo” (Thomas Anderson, his pre-Matrix character) sitting in a tube with a rubber duck on his head. While this gag does not make the comedy pedal sound too harsh, it is a comic style that does not lift any of the cerebral veins that movies have known and theorized by Matrix fans for years.
In his identity as Thomas Anderson, at least some of the resurrection stories will occur in the “real” world, making Neo’s activities more informed. The trailer above showed that he lived in San Francisco and talked to his therapist (played by Harris). In another scene, he met Trinity College without remembering her.
