"Extinct": Netflix to release the animated film in November 2021

Netflix has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the animated movie Extinct. The film is scheduled for release in November 2021. The film is expected to be available in other Netflix territories, but we don’t have a complete list.

The feature film, announced for 2018, was reported by a consortium of actors working on The Simpsons. Joel Cohen, John Frink, and Rob LaZebnik, while David Silverman was the director. Raymond S. Persi, who worked on Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, co-directed Extinct.

The 84-minute film was created by several production and animation studios, including Cinesite, China Lion Films, and HB Wink Animation.

Check out what you can expect from Extinct:

“Op and Ed are two adorable donut-shaped animals called FLUMMELS who accidentally time travel from 1835 to the Shanghai of today. Here they discover traffic, trans fats, and worst of all, that the Flummis are now extinct. It’s up to this awkward pair to save themselves, save their species And perhaps change the course of history.”

The cast of The Extinct includes Rachel Bloom, Zazie Beetz, Ken Jeong, Jim Jefferies, Catherine O’Hara, and Adam Devine.

As previously reported, the exact regional availability of Extinct has yet to be officially announced. The film was initially announced for a November 2021 release date.

Extinct will be released on Netflix on November 19, 2021, along with the live-action series Cowboy Bebop and Tick, Tick Boom.

We understand that the film has already been released in several territories or will be distributed in the U.K. by Sky Cinema and NowTV in August 2020. Other examples of the film’s international distribution include:

  • A release by Constantin Film in Germany.
  • Independent Films in the Netherlands.
  • Countless other individual distribution deals in each region.

Although Netflix’s animation strategy has shifted primarily to domestic productions in recent years, Netflix has still acquired several animated films for external distribution. This year, for example, Netflix acquired three animated films from Sony Animation on an exclusive basis.
