The Cowboy Bebop cast and crew knew the original anime had a certain vibe that made it memorable, and they did everything they could to capture that spirit for the live-action version of Netflix.
Daniela Pineda, who plays Faye Valentine in the new series, told about the atmosphere behind the scenes in an interview with Deadline. He first mentioned the music that fits into a show with such a unique and popular soundtrack. “[Director] Alex Garcia Lopez has always played music and always jazz and always bebop.” Looking at the overlap between genres, he said, “I think sometimes people forget that bebop is a type of jazz music, a certain era of jazz music, and it has always existed.”
Music was not the only link between the band and the source material. “The facility we trained in was covered from floor to ceiling with bebop pictures and bebop merchandise,” Pineda said. “I think like there has been an explosion in the commodity markets for bebop in 2019 and 2020, probably because we bought everything.”
Fans of cowboy bebop anime have noticed all sorts of references and implications for the original series incorporated into the adaptation. Pineda describes all the conditions that had perfected each other: “We were in a beautiful anime bubble everywhere we went. “And when there was a TV in a room, the resident was always open. I mean, I can not stress enough that we always had it with us.”
