A master of horror, Flanagan’s most recent horror series Midnight Mass premiered on Netflix in September. He is also the genius after Netflix shows like The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor and the films Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, Hush and Oculus.
While Flanagan did not develop further on what a Star Wars horror film would entail, he would not be the first to tell a horror story set in this universe. Joe Schreiber announced his horror novel Death Troopers in 2009, which tells the story of a group of widows leaving a quiet Star Destroyer in the middle of space, but, as with most scary stories, the spaceship is not as expelled as it seems.
While Flanagan might not be saying any scary stories about a galaxy far, far away any time soon, he is already happening another horror series for Netflix. Flanagan will be managing produce and directing 4 episodes of a short series titled The Fall of the House of Usher, named after the 1839 Edgar Allen Poe short story of the same name.
The first Gothic horror story follows an unnamed narrator traveling to help their friend, Roderick Usher, at his breaking estate in the countryside, only to uncover the dark and disturbing secrets hiding within its walls.
Related to Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, which replaces short stories by Henry James, The Fall of the House of Usher will introduce multiple of Poe’s works, starting with the titular one.
“If the stars align in a way that we decide to go back into the Haunting world, it would have to be so much on that track that we have set up,” stated Flanagan in a past interview about a possible Haunting Season 3. “It would have to be with the right piece of IP, it would have to be with the right ghost-centric story, and it would have to fit with Bly [Manor] and Hill House.”
Rahul Kohli, who also began in Midnight Mass and Bly Manor, reacted to Flanagan’s tweet, saying, “You have been reading my diary,” along with a drawing of a zombified Storm Trooper.
