The final season of Ricky Gervais’ After Life Netflix series began in April 2021 and has since ended. Here’s an updated guide to everything you need to know about After Life Season 3, including release status, new cast, production updates, debuts, and more.
After Life, in case you did not already know, is an original Netflix comedy series featuring Ricky Gervais (and lots of celebrities if you follow his previous works, such as The Office, Derek, or Extras) with Tony. After his wife’s death, Tony has suffered a significant loss and has to pick up the broken pieces and find a new purpose.
Season 2 arrived on Netflix worldwide on April 24, 2020, with the first season in March 2019.
Before we dive into everything you need to know about season 3, here’s the first trailer, released by Ricky Gervais on November 9, 2021.
When was After Life renewed for a third season?
Fortunately, we did not have to wait long for Netflix to launch season three. On May 6, 2020, Netflix UK released a short tweet confirming the good news:
From the start, the chances of renewing After Life to a specific capacity were high, as mentioned below.
Was the series a success? We never received any official numbers from Netflix. Still, Gervais said the second season ran longer than the first (within a certain amount of time after release).
In addition, Ricky Gervais is currently involved in his first multi-year contract with Netflix. The agreement was signed in July 2019. After Life and Humanity released the deal, there are at least two new projects following the third season of After Life.
When the deal was first announced, Ricky joked with season three or, as he has chosen in some of his previous shows, a special. He said, “Yeah, unless I can get someone on the team to help me write the third line, sit me down and introduce myself.”
Where is the third season of After Life produced?
Current production status: Start of production/writing – Production is expected to start in April 2021 (last update: 27/07/2020)
Shortly after the third season was announced, Ricky Gervais began writing.
We received the last update on July 23, 2020, when we got our first look at the draft of the Season 3 Live season 1 episode (and the following tweet – see below).
As you know, all recordings around the world are currently postponed. According to a report by The Guardian, the After Life films in the UK will resume production in July 2020.
In August 2020, we learned from ProductionIntelligence that filming for the third season of After Life would begin in April 2021.
According to this production schedule, this still applies from March 2021, when filming takes “7 weeks” according to this production schedule.
In April 2021, Ricky Gervais confirmed that filming was scheduled to begin on Monday, April 19.
Why is the third season of After Life the last season?
After Life follows suit, Ricky Gervais has often finished his shows after two or three seasons.
The Mirror reports that Ricky Gervais has confirmed that the fourth season will not return.
What can you expect from the third season of After Life?
Let’s take a look at the recent events of season 2. During the talent show in the city, Tony seems to recover from his loss day after day but suffers another setback at season 2. His father, the game by David Bradley, dies of dementia in a nursing home. We suspect there will be an official funeral in the third season.
Matt’s marriage appears to have been sorted out during the second season. Still, if it takes time, it could be investigated in the future.
The main plot of the third season would be the sequel, and hopefully, the local newspaper will be saved. Tony promised Sandy that the diary would continue, and Tony did not seem to have any new meaning in Life.
We will also see how Tony copes with the loss of his father and how the relationship with Emma will flourish (or depend on exhaustion), revealed at the end of the second season.
Of course, many of them are engaged in speculation. We look forward to the ongoing Tony Laptop flashbacks and the introduction of new characters.
