Director Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films in the Harry Potter series, recently announced that the late actor Alan Rickman knew the fate of Severus Snape’s character when he made the first film.
“We convinced him, and then JK Rowling invited him to dinner and told him something about what would happen to Snape during the series and in the seventh book,” Columbus recalls in a history club. The director added that if Rickman had had more information about Snape than he had, he would have included “little quirks” in his portrayal, noting, “… and I could not figure out where they came from.”
“I went to him later and said, ‘What was that? He said to me,’ Oh, you want to know when you read the seventh book, ‘” Colombo recalls. “I direct the first film.” But the director admitted that when he read the seventh book and said it was an excellent choice. ”
Fans will remember that Snape was initially portrayed as an enemy of Harry Potter in the books and movies. The series later revealed that Snape was a loyal double agent for Dumbledore, who had promised to spend his life protecting Harry from Lord Voldemort because he loved the boy’s mother, Lily.
During the same conversation, Columbus announced that Rickman was initially reluctant to join the Harry Potter series because he did not want to be branded a villain after his previously negative roles, Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1989) and his corrupt Sheriff Nottingham . and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991.
Rickman was not the only actor who was careful not to go to the cinema. Richard Harris and Maggie Smith were to be persuaded to join the cast. In all eight Harry Potter films, Rickman and Smith ended up playing Professor Severus Snape and Professor Minerva McGonagall, respectively. Unfortunately, Rickman died in January 2016 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 69 years old.
Harris, meanwhile, appeared as Professor Albus Dumbledore, director of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in the first two films before his death in 2002 at the age of 72. He was replaced by Michael Gabon, who has played Dumbledore in the last six films.
It was recently announced that a special anniversary event called Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts will debut on HBO Max on January 1, 2022.
