Cobie Smulders returns as Maria Hill, confidant Nick Fury and former assistant director of S.H.I.E.L.D., for Marvel’s upcoming Disney + series, Secret Invasion.
By the deadline, Smulders will resume his role in the series expected to be released in 2022. Secret Invasion will have its first appearance on Smulders in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019.
Hill was first introduced to the Avengers in 2012 as a resident agent for the S.H.I.E.L.D. and a dear friend of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Smulders has many character appearances in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. A.B.C., which premiered in 2013 and lasted for seven seasons. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Hill helps Nick Fury, Steve Rogers / Captain America, Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow, and Sam Wilson / Falcon do more of the evil HYDRA organization that got S.H.I.E.L.D. His next appearance was in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he again helps the Avengers avert the so-called Ultron threat.
Hill will go to dust in the post-credit scene in Avengers: Infinity War and appear in Avengers: Endgame after being revived by Bruce Banner / Hulk with Infinity Stones. While Endgame was technically the last time Hill appeared in MCU, Smulders played a role in Spider-Man: Far From Home, when Skrull secretly called Søren Hill. Under the MCU timeline, Hill proved to be a talented, intelligent, and reliable agent and a recurring ally with the Avengers.
In the comics, Hill first appeared in New Avengers # 4 with Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch in 2005. The role has also appeared in several animated series, animated films, and video games, including The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Iron Man: Rise of Technovore and 2020 action RPG, Avengers.
Secret Invasion was first announced in December 2020 and is based on the 2008-09 Marvel Comics event of the same name, which hosted Brian Michael Bendis, Lenin Francis Yu, Mark Morales, and Laura Martin. In the multi-title series, Skrulls follows a long-term plan to invade Earth by replacing many of the world’s most influential and famous superheroes. Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn will play the roles of Nick Fury and Talos, respectively. The next series will also include Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo. Ben-Adir will play the series’ leading loyalist, whose identity is not yet known.
