Apple has finally responded to the allegations against ‘The Banker’, an original film under its flagship, by removing it from the AFI Fest in Hollywood this week.
The cast of the Banker includes Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Michael Harney, and Nicholas Hoult.
It highlights the true story of two African-Americans who became the owner of a regional bank in the 1950’s American South despite racial opposition. Bernard Garrett Sr. (played by Mackie).
The Banker was set to premiere at AFI Fest on Thursday night. Unfortunately, because of the allegations of sexual abuse and historical distortion that flashed against Bernard Garrett Jr., who helped his father’s story to the big screen, Apple has decided to scrap its plan.
“We purchased The Banker earlier this year as we were moved by the film’s entertaining and educational story about social change and financial literacy. However, last week, some concerns surrounding the film took our attention. We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into this matter and determine the best next step. In light of this, we are no longer premiering The Banker at AFI Fest.” – Apple added in a statement.
Cynthia Garrett accused Garrett Jr. of prolonged sexual molestation and biographical misrepresentation in the script.
She added this in the comment section of the film. Her allegations were confirmed by Grace Garrett (relative). She wrote – “This story is not being told accurately, and Bernard Jr. is lying. Please speak with the other eight children of Bernard Garrett Sr.”
Both Cynthia and Grace Garrett have refused to give further details on this subject. In her post, Cynthia Garrett further mentioned she and her sister was molested by Garrett Jr. for years.
She added – “Every producer and star who played a part in the film should be ashamed. Apple TV should be ashamed.”
Apple didn’t testify any claims against Garrett Jr. or about its decision to roll back to The Banker in Wednesday’s statement.
The film was set to release on Dec. 6. Apple had acquired distribution rights of the film in July this year.
