Juan Vaca, the story director for the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day, has been laid off from developer The Coalition. The departure comes as part of a broader workforce reduction at Xbox, hitting just 14 days before the high-stakes prequel is scheduled to launch.
The timing of the move highlights a sharp contrast between project completion and job security. On September 17, 2026, the studio celebrated the news that the game had officially “gone gold,” a term indicating the master version of the software is finished and ready for distribution. Only five days later, on September 22, Vaca was among 268 employees across Microsoft’s gaming division to receive layoff notices.

Vaca had been with The Coalition for more than four years, steering the narrative for the franchise’s return to its roots. The layoff was part of a significant internal reorganization that is reportedly shifting several major Xbox pillars. As part of this same restructuring, Microsoft is moving the future development of the Halo franchise under Activision’s management and consolidating teams across the Forza and Fable franchises.
Despite the loss of its story director, Xbox and The Coalition have indicated that launch plans for the title remain unchanged. Gears of War: E-Day is set to release on October 6, 2026, with premium early access beginning on October 1.
The layoffs reflect a continuing trend of volatility within major game publishers, where even the successful delivery of a flagship title does not necessarily guarantee a team’s stability. Vaca confirmed his departure on professional social media platforms, expressing openness to new roles after nearly half a decade of work on the Gears of War universe.
While the story and core campaign are finished, the impact of the director’s absence on post-launch content or future narrative expansions remains unclear. For now, the studio appears focused on the immediate rollout of the game, which serves as a foundational prequel to the original 2006 title.
