Apple released the second developer beta of iOS 27.2 (build 24B5089g) on September 21, 2026, revealing code for a new proactive security measure designed to combat street-level “snatch-and-grab” thefts. The feature, internally referred to as “AutoLock,” aims to secure a device the moment it is forcibly taken from a user’s hand.
While Apple has not yet officially announced the tool, code found within the beta suggests a sophisticated “voting” architecture to determine when an iPhone should lock itself. Rather than relying on a single sensor, the system weighs “theft signals”—such as sharp acceleration, a sudden loss of Apple Watch connectivity, or a total network drop—against “veto signals.” These safeguards include active biometric authentication, presence in a familiar location, or specific ongoing app activities, which can override a lock command to prevent false positives during legitimate use.
The AutoLock service currently operates as an experimental background process. In its current beta 2 state, the actual device-locking component is disabled while Apple gathers anonymized sensor data to refine the detection logic. This proactive approach differs from existing Stolen Device Protection by focusing on the physical act of the theft itself rather than the subsequent attempt to change passcodes or Apple ID settings.
Health App Redesign
The iOS 27.2 beta 2 update also introduces a significant overhaul of the Health app. The interface now features “Insight” and “Longevity” tabs. A new “Health Age” score has been added, providing users with a metric based on their physiological data.
In addition to Health, the Shortcuts app has been updated with an expanded “Describe a Shortcut” feature. This allows users to create complex automations using natural language instructions that now support third-party app actions. For example, a user could describe a multi-step routine involving a third-party fitness tracker and a smart home app, and Shortcuts will generate the necessary logic.
Media and CarPlay Enhancements
The update includes several refinements across Apple’s service ecosystem:
- Apple Music: The app now includes code for a live countdown timer for upcoming album releases, allowing fans to track the exact second new music becomes available.
- CarPlay Ultra: New “Drive Mode Theme” references suggest users will soon be able to customize gauge styles, colors, and vehicle ambient lighting directly through the CarPlay interface.
