The Amazing Race Season 39 began its journey with an unprecedented strategic shift that immediately upended the traditional racing dynamic. In a series first, all 13 starting teams were handed an Express Pass during the opening minutes, transforming a rare advantage into a common, yet highly competitive, tool.
The abundance of these passes came with a critical set of constraints. All 13 passes must be utilized by the end of the sixth leg of the race.

Strategic Maneuvers
The first leg winners, married couple Erin Taylor and Javi Vitnimilla, demonstrated the power of this new advantage early. Starting the leg in 12th place, the pair opted to burn their Express Pass at the first available opportunity to skip the Roadblock. This move allowed them to leapfrog nearly the entire field and secure a first-place finish.
The premiere tasks centered around architectural landmarks. Later, the Detour “Run It Up” challenged teams with a flag memorization and delivery task.
While Erin and Javi used their pass to climb from the back of the pack, other teams used theirs strategically.
Despite the safety net of the Express Pass, navigation errors proved costly. This highlights a core reality of the new season: an Express Pass can skip a task, but it cannot fix a lost trail.

The race now moves to Europe for the second half of this premiere event. This season’s route is confirmed to visit nine countries, including the show’s first-ever visit to Albania.
