Twenty years ago today, on October 1, 2006, Showtime introduced audiences to Dexter Morgan, a forensic blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlighted as a vigilante serial killer. The premiere of Dexter launched one of television’s most enduring antiheroes, sparking an eight-season run that concluded its initial chapter in 2013.
To mark this two-decade milestone, Paramount+ released the official trailer for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 on Tuesday morning. The streaming service also confirmed that the series will return on October 30, 2026. Michael C. Hall reprises his role as Dexter, continuing a narrative journey that has evolved significantly since the character’s first appearance.

The Resurrection of the Franchise
The upcoming season of Dexter: Resurrection follows a period of expansion and contraction for the franchise. While the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin was canceled in August 2025 after a single season, the flagship continuation has gained momentum. According to Paramount Press Express, the second season of Resurrection will feature high-profile additions to the cast, including Brian Cox as “The New York Ripper” and Dan Stevens as “The Five Borough Killer.”
These new antagonists suggest a shift in geography and scale for the series, moving the focus toward New York-based threats that challenge Dexter’s survival following the events of the New Blood limited series. Michael C. Hall continues his heavy involvement with the property, having also provided narration for the now-defunct prequel project.
Anniversary Events in New York City
Beyond the screen, the 20th anniversary is being commemorated through several live events in New York. A Dexter 20th Anniversary Museum is scheduled to open in the Chelsea neighborhood from October 9 to October 11, 2026. The immersive experience, detailed by Secret NYC, will allow fans to explore the show’s history and iconography. In a nod to the show’s dark themes, the museum will also host a blood drive in partnership with the New York Blood Center.
This retrospective and look-forward comes exactly twenty years after the pilot episode first established the “Code of Harry” and changed the landscape of prestige cable drama.
