HBO has given fans a taste for what will come on their network next year, and fans finally get a little glimpse of their upcoming fantasy-horror series Lovecraft Country, and executive produced by Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams.
In a new ad, all of their series premiered and returned in 2020, showcasing not only Lovecraft Country but short vignettes of ESSENCE favorites including Unsafe, Succession, and Westworld.
Lovecraft Country
Love craft Country, based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, follows Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors), his friend Letitia (Jernie Smollett-Bell), and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance), as they incarnate on a cross Let’s take it. In the 1950s, Jim Crow travels the country through America in search of Atticus’ father.
It was announced in 2017 about Green and Peel had teamed up for the highly anticipated series, with the writer/producer stating, “When I first read Lovecraft Country I knew that it would contain anything on television Had the potential to be the opposite of. Jordan, J.J., bot, Warner Bros, and HBO are all in the business of pushing the limits while telling the story, and I’m thrilled to be working with them on this project.
Lovecraft Country
Based on the 2016 novel by the great writer Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country focuses on 25-year-old Atticus Black (Majors). After his father goes missing, Black joins up with his friend Letitia “Leti” Dandridge (Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Vance) to embark on a road trip across the 1950s Jim Crow America to find him.
This begins as a struggle to survive and overcome the racist terrors of white America and the evil spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. The goal is an anthological horror series that reclaims genre storytelling from the African-American perspective.
Jonathan Majors has the role of Atticus Black, Jurnee-Smollett Bell as Letitia’ Leti’ Dandridge, and Wunmi Mosaku as Ruby Dandridge, a hustler just like her half-sister Leticia, only her hustles haven’t paid off.
Aunjanue Ellis, Courtney B. Vance, and Elizabeth Debicki will play the roles of Hippolyta Black, George Black, and Christina Braithwaite, respectively.
