The journey through the Second Age is set to resume as Amazon Prime Video prepares for the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 on November 11, 2026. As the series enters its third installment, it moves closer to resolving one of its most debated narrative puzzles: the true identity of the Dark Wizard.
The character, portrayed by Ciarán Hinds, has been the subject of intense speculation since his introduction. While his visual appearance and magical prowess led many fans to believe he might be a younger version of Saruman the White, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have definitively stated that the Dark Wizard is not Saruman. This denial has shifted attention toward Tolkien’s deeper lore, specifically the “Blue Wizards” or Istari who traveled to the east of Middle-earth. According to reports from fansites like Fellowship of Fans, there is growing speculation that the character may be revealed as the Blue Wizard known as Pallando.
New Faces and Iconic Voices in Season 3
Season 3 will expand the cast with several high-profile additions. Jamie Campbell Bower has joined the production to portray Celeborn, a significant figure in Elven history and the husband of Galadriel. His absence in the first two seasons was a point of discussion among viewers, and his arrival is expected to shift the political and personal dynamics within the Elven realms.
In a surprising casting move, Simon Pegg has been confirmed as the voice of the Balrog. The creature, which was awakened in the depths of Khazad-dûm during the previous season, is expected to play a more prominent role as the dwarves face the consequences of their subterranean ambitions. The addition of Pegg suggests a focus on the creature’s presence as a recurring threat rather than a silent force of nature.

The Expanding Middle-earth Slate
The upcoming season of The Rings of Power is part of a broader resurgence for the franchise. Warner Bros. is currently moving forward with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis is returning to both direct and star in the film, reprising his iconic role as Sméagol. Production reached a milestone in September 2026 when the first images from the film’s set were released, offering a glimpse into the visual direction of this new cinematic entry.
The franchise is also expanding into the gaming sector. Warhorse Studios is currently developing an open-world Middle-earth RPG. Unlike previous multiplayer titles, this project is being built as a single-player experience, aiming to provide a detailed and immersive exploration of Tolkien’s world. While a specific release date for the game has not been finalized, the project is a key component of the current “Middle-earth renaissance” that includes both streaming and theatrical content.

With The Rings of Power Season 3 arriving in less than two weeks, the focus remains on how the series will weave its original mysteries into the established tapestry of the Second Age. The reveal of the Dark Wizard’s identity and the introduction of Celeborn represent the show’s ongoing effort to reconcile its narrative inventions with the foundational texts of the legendarium.
