Krafton announced on October 1, 2026, that it has officially ended development for PUBG: Black Budget, an extraction shooter that was formally revealed less than a year ago. The decision follows an internal review which concluded that the game’s direction would not support a sustainable long-term player experience.
The cancellation marks the second time in 2026 that Krafton has scrapped a major spin-off within the PUBG universe. In March, the publisher shuttered PUBG: Blindspot, a top-down tactical shooter, signaling a rigorous vetting process for new entries in the franchise despite the ongoing success of the original battle royale.

Feedback and Technical Hurdles
PUBG: Black Budget underwent two closed alpha testing phases, one in December 2025 and another more recently in June 2026. While the project had been in development under its internal name since 2022, it was only formally branded as a PUBG title in November 2025. Reports following the June alpha suggested the game struggled with “raid fatigue” and technical clarity regarding combat perception.
The project was led by creative director Paweł Smolewski and developed at PUBG Studios Amsterdam. It was designed to be a supernatural-themed extraction shooter set on the island of Coli, a location trapped in a time loop and defined by anomalies known as “Anomalies.” Despite the unique setting, Krafton determined that the core loop would not meet the demands of a competitive live-service market.
Shifting Focus to New Titles
The cancellation of Black Budget comes as Krafton pivots its resources toward other experimental titles in the PUBG pipeline. During Gamescom in August 2026, the company announced PUBG: Ded.Net, a roguelike spin-off that appears to be the next major focus for the studio’s expansion efforts.
The decision to pull the plug on Black Budget reflects a broader industry trend where the “extraction shooter” genre has proven difficult to break into. Following the closure of both Blindspot and now Black Budget within the same calendar year, it remains unclear if the assets or lore established for the island of Coli will be integrated into future projects or if the supernatural setting will be abandoned entirely.
