Activision announced on September 28, 2026, that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will implement a long-requested change to how Double XP tokens function. Starting with the upcoming release, these tokens will only count down while a player is in an active match, ending the previous system where timers continued to run during lobby wait times and menu navigation.
This shift addresses a persistent point of friction for the player base, ensuring that the full duration of earned or purchased XP boosts is utilized solely for gameplay. According to official details, existing tokens accrued in previous titles, including Black Ops 7 and Warzone, will be fully compatible with Modern Warfare 4 and will follow the new in-match countdown rules.

Technical Overhauls and Mechanical Changes
The update to XP mechanics coincides with a significant technical shift for the franchise. Developer Infinity Ward has overhauled the aiming system for Modern Warfare 4, moving away from traditional “bloom” mechanics. Instead, bullets will now fire directly from the weapon’s barrel position, a change intended to provide more predictable and skill-based gunplay.
The game also marks a hardware transition for the series. Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2. This release marks the first time the franchise has appeared on a Nintendo platform since 2013 and signifies the first entry to skip the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles entirely.
Regarding subscription services, reports indicate that Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. This would represent a departure from the strategy used for Black Ops 7, which arrived on the service on its release day in 2025.

Strategic Adjustments for a Competitive Window
These player-focused changes arrive as the 2026 holiday gaming season prepares for the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026. Analysts suggest that concessions like the XP timer change and new technical features are part of a broader strategy to maintain player retention in the face of significant market competition.
In addition to the XP and mechanical updates, Activision recently announced a new cosmetic toggle for Call of Duty: Warzone. This feature allows players to disable non-military or “silly” character skins, replacing them with standard military models on their local screen. While this toggle is confirmed for the battle royale mode, it is not yet supported for Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer at launch and remains under consideration for future updates.
