Reports indicate Prime Video has cancelled the action-comedy series “Ride or Die” after a single season, ending the run of a show that had become a surprise viewership powerhouse for the platform. Despite its departure from the service, lead producer Paramount Television Studios is currently shopping the series to rival networks and streaming platforms in hopes of finding a new home for the production.
The series, which stars Hannah Waddingham as a secret international assassin and Octavia Spencer as her best friend, was a significant performer according to third-party tracking. Nielsen data showed the series logged 922 million viewing minutes in its second week alone. Reports further indicate the show held the #1 spot globally among Prime Video original series for its first three weeks following its July 15 premiere.

The Demographics Dilemma
The reports have sparked discussion regarding how streaming services measure success. “Ride or Die” was reportedly produced under budget, yet reports suggest Amazon’s decision was driven by a shift in subscriber strategy. The platform is reportedly prioritizing content that acquires new demographics rather than retaining existing audiences, such as the “middle-aged women” demographic the show successfully captured.
This “acquisition vs. retention” metric means that even high-performing shows are vulnerable if they do not attract a specific, untapped segment of the market.
The reported cancellation of “Ride or Die” mirrors recent hurdles faced by other high-profile action properties on the platform. Alan Ritchson, star of the hit series “Reacher,” recently revealed that a planned adaptation of the Lee Child novel “Die Trying” was scrapped for political reasons. The comparison underscores a trend where internal corporate logic and demographic targeting can override raw viewership numbers.

Created by Tessa Coates, the series balanced high-stakes action with a comedic dynamic between Waddingham and Spencer. While the first season concluded with the major reveal of its protagonist’s double life as an assassin, fans are now left waiting to see if Paramount can secure a second season on a different platform to resolve the remaining cliffhangers.
