Double Fine Productions is set to release its first project as an independent studio following its separation from Xbox Game Studios earlier this year. The new title, Thank You Bus Driver, marks a rapid return to the studio’s signature experimental style.
The game is the debut release under “Double Fine Action Labs,” a new internal label designed for smaller, faster-to-market projects. This shift comes just months after the studio officially became independent again in July 2026. As part of the separation from Xbox, Double Fine regained the intellectual property and publishing rights for its entire back catalog, including Psychonauts 2 and Kiln.

Gameplay and Mechanics
Thank You Bus Driver focuses on the chaotic management of a public transit route. Players must navigate a bus through various environments within strict time limits while simultaneously maintaining order among the passengers.
The core gameplay involves:
- Driving mechanics inspired by arcade classics, requiring players to hit checkpoints and manage tight schedules.
- Enforcing transit rules by using “freakishly long arms” to slap passengers who misbehave or break protocol.
- Managing escalating difficulty as routes become more crowded and passenger behavior becomes more erratic.
The project represents a move toward the “weird” and experimental roots the studio was known for prior to its acquisition. By utilizing the Action Labs label, Double Fine intends to prototype and release creative concepts without the lengthy development cycles typically associated with AAA titles.
Platform Availability and Independence
At launch, Thank You Bus Driver will be available exclusively on PC via Steam, GOG, and Itch.io. While the studio previously operated under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella for seven years, the new title is notably skipping Xbox consoles at its initial release.
The transition to independence has also allowed the studio to reclaim 100% of the revenue from its previous titles, which were formerly published by Xbox.
