The AI-driven horror universe of M3GAN is taking a sharper, more adult turn this fall. Soulm8te, the upcoming spin-off from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, is scheduled to premiere on Hulu and the Hulu hub on Disney+ on October 1, 2026.
The film will serve as the flagship title for the 2026 “Huluween” programming block, marking a significant tonal shift for the franchise. Unlike the PG-13 entries that preceded it, Soulm8te has received an R rating for sexual content, gore, and strong violence.
A Mature Pivot for the AI Franchise
Directed by Kate Dolan, Soulm8te is framed as an “unhinged” erotic thriller, drawing inspiration from 90s genre staples while remaining firmly rooted in modern technology. The story follows David (David Rysdahl), a grieving engineer who acquires an AI companion to help him cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife.
In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, David subverts the android’s programming. The AI, named Sara (Lily Sullivan), eventually transforms from a harmless companion into a deadly, obsessive soulmate. Claudia Doumit also stars in the production, which aims to explore the darker, more intimate risks of artificial intelligence.
Production and Release Strategy
The path to streaming has seen several shifts in strategy. Originally, Soulm8te was slated for a wide theatrical release on January 2, 2026. However, the production was eventually pulled from the theatrical calendar and moved to digital VOD platforms in August 2026 before landing its current October streaming date.
The move to Hulu suggests a strategic pivot toward digital-first horror for more experimental or adult-oriented spin-offs within the “M3GAN-verse.” While the primary film series focuses on the campy, technophobic horror that appealed to a broad demographic, Soulm8te is positioned to capture an older audience looking for a more visceral experience.
The film previously made its debut at the Gaze International LGBT Film Festival in Dublin, hinting at a more complex narrative than a standard slasher. Fans of the franchise can expect a new sneak peek clip to be released alongside the upcoming streaming launch to showcase the film’s shift toward high-tension psychological horror.
