Zack Snyder’s sci-fi franchise, Rebel Moon, currently faces an uncertain timeline as the director shifts his creative focus toward a series of new productions. While the universe was initially conceived with long-term expansion in mind, Snyder’s immediate schedule is now occupied by a gritty LAPD SWAT thriller for Netflix and the development of his long-gestating passion project, The Last Photograph.
This transition in priority follows the release of the director’s cuts for the first two films. According to viewership data reported by Comic Basics, these extended versions reached lifetime viewership figures of approximately 13.6 million and 14.2 million respectively by the second half of 2026. While these numbers show a steady interest in the director’s specific vision for the property, Snyder is currently prioritizing other projects.
Snyder’s Expanding Production Slate
The current status of the franchise suggests a pivot toward other genres. Snyder is prioritizing his upcoming LAPD-focused movie for Netflix, moving away from the space opera setting of Veldt to a more grounded, contemporary setting. This project is part of his ongoing partnership with the streaming platform, though it notably takes precedence over any immediate return to the Rebel Moon narrative.
In addition to his work with Netflix, Snyder is also attached to a remake of Escape From New York for StudioCanal. Reimagining the 1981 John Carpenter classic marks a significant step into established cult-classic territory, further filling a production calendar that leaves little room for the intensive post-production and filming requirements of another space epic in the near term.
While the director has previously explored the possibility of further sequels, the current focus remains on evaluating the performance of existing chapters while he explores different creative avenues through 2026 and beyond.
