The feature film debut of comedian Nate Bargatze, “The Breadwinner,” officially began streaming on Netflix in the United States on September 26, 2026. The move to the streaming platform follows a difficult theatrical run for the family-oriented comedy, which originally premiered in cinemas.

Directed by Eric Appel and co-written by Bargatze and Dan Lagana, the film attempts to translate Bargatze’s signature “clean” comedy persona into a narrative feature. The movie adheres strictly to the comedian’s established brand of observational, relatable humor.

The film adapts Bargatze's observational humor to the domestic challenges of a stay-at-home father.

The plot centers on Nate Wilcox (Bargatze), a suburban salesman whose life is upended when his wife, Katie (Mandy Moore), lands a life-changing investment on “Shark Tank” for a household invention. The deal forces a role swap in the household. As Katie becomes the family’s primary earner, Nate must navigate the complexities of being a stay-at-home father to their children.

From Theatrical Disappointment to Streaming Hope

The film’s arrival on Netflix marks a significant pivot after its initial box office performance. “The Breadwinner” grossed approximately $20.2 million at the domestic box office against a production budget of $25 million. Despite the star power of a supporting cast that includes Colin Jost, Kumail Nanjiani, Will Forte, and Zach Cherry, the film struggled to find a theatrical audience.

Critical reception was similarly lukewarm, with critics largely panning the film. While some family-focused reviewers appreciated the film’s commitment to wholesome content, it currently holds a rating between 20% and 28% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Suitability for Family Movie Night

Despite the critical panning, the film’s placement on Netflix may allow it to find the niche audience Bargatze has cultivated through his standup specials. The film is rated PG for mild suggestive references, making it one of the few recent live-action comedies geared specifically toward a multi-generational audience.

The film marks a milestone for Bargatze, who seeks to provide “clean” entertainment options for families. For fans of the comedian, the film offers the same deadpan delivery and self-deprecating style that defined his Netflix specials, though the scripted format and ensemble requirements represent a departure from his usual solo stage presence. Whether the film can overcome its theatrical “flop” status to become a streaming staple will depend on how well Bargatze’s “common man” appeal resonates with the platform’s broader weekend audience.
