What it’s about.
The Long Call follows Inspector Matthew Venn, who has returned to a small community in North Devon to live with his husband. He grew up in the Barum Church but left the strict evangelical community at age 19 to study. At that time, he publicly declared that he was no longer a believer, much to his mother’s dismay.
After discovering a body on the beach near Matthew’s home, a shadow of doubt hangs over the entire community. Matthew will work closely with Inspector Jen Rafferty, a fiercely determined single mother. She moved to Devon to escape her traumatic life in London.
Matthew’s return forces her to confront her complex relationship with her mother once again. The murder case will reopen old wounds, and Matthew will uncover a deadly secret to expose the killer.
Lead actor Ben Aldridge explains his character, “We meet him at the beginning of the series, having returned to the hometown he left – or was kicked out of – 20 years earlier. It isn’t effortless – he couldn’t live there anymore. Still, he wasn’t welcome there because he grew up in a rigorous religious community that didn’t agree with his beliefs.
“We first meet him at his father’s funeral, which he is not allowed to attend, and that’s when he discovers the body on the beach.
