The Apollyon building serves as the central hub for the horrors of AHS: 13.

The 13th season of the long-running anthology series, officially titled AHS: 13, has launched with a three-episode premiere event that signals a massive narrative shift for the franchise. The opening episodes—titled “13,” “1:13 AM,” and “Rauhnacht”—establish a multiverse-style crossover that bridges several previous seasons into a single, high-stakes storyline centered in New York City.

The season follows Ben DeSoto, portrayed by Joey Pollari, a hospice worker who suffers from triskaidekaphobia, an acute fear of the number 13. His work brings him to the Apollyon building in New York, a location that is quickly revealed to be far more than a standard residential or medical facility. According to the season’s lore, the Apollyon serves as a literal portal to Hell, housing a subterranean location known as “Club Hell.”

The ritual of drawing 13 vials of blood from remains a central mystery.

The central mystery revolves around a patient known as Mr. Nas. Described as an 87-year-old man, Mr. Nas possesses disturbing demonic physical traits, including a tail and cloven hooves. His presence in the Apollyon building is overseen by Mr. Phibes, a medical specialist played by John Waters. Mr. Phibes is tasked with drawing exactly 13 vials of blood from the demonic patient every week, though the purpose of this ritual remains a focal point of the early episodes.

The Return of the Langdons and a Growing Multiverse

In a move that leans heavily into the series’ history, AHS: 13 features the return of franchise mainstays Jessica Lange and Evan Peters in multiple roles. This season marks an unprecedented level of character reprisal, as both actors are portraying several of their most iconic figures simultaneously within the same narrative thread.

Jessica Lange returns to the screen to play five distinct characters. These include Constance Langdon from Murder House, Sister Jude from Asylum, Fiona Goode from Coven, and Elsa Mars from Freak Show. The premiere also hints at a fifth, as-yet-unannounced role for Lange that is expected to be revealed as the season progresses.

Evan Peters similarly reprises three of his most notorious characters: the troubled Tate Langdon, the cult leader Kai Anderson, and the Hotel founder James Patrick March. The intersection of these characters suggests that the Apollyon building is acting as a convergence point for the spirits and entities that have defined the series for over a decade.

Format and Release Schedule

Breaking from the traditional hour-long format, AHS: 13 consists of 13 half-hour episodes. This condensed runtime is part of a non-traditional release strategy that will see the episodes debut in various groupings of trios and pairs throughout the month.

The season is structured to conclude its run on October 29. By shifting to a faster-paced, half-hour format, the premiere suggests a more serialized and frantic approach to the horror, focusing on the immediate threat posed by the Apollyon’s connection to the underworld and the true identity of Mr. Nas.
