Director Danny Boyle has confirmed that the final chapter of the 28 Years Later trilogy is officially moving forward, bringing Cillian Murphy back into a central role. Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival on September 30, 2026, Boyle addressed the future of the horror franchise following the mixed commercial reception of the second installment.
Boyle revealed that screenwriter Alex Garland has already completed the script for the third film. While the second chapter featured only a brief, uncredited appearance by Murphy’s character, Jim, Boyle emphasized that the upcoming finale will feature “a lot of Cillian Murphy.” This confirmation serves as a direct reassurance to fans after the second film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, saw a significant dip in ticket sales.

Released in January 2026 and directed by Nia DaCosta, The Bone Temple earned approximately $58.5 million at the global box office. Despite the returns, Boyle’s comments indicate that the production remains committed to completing the trilogy as originally planned.
The decision to put Murphy back at the forefront follows a busy 2026 for the Academy Award-winning actor. In addition to his cameo in the sequel, Murphy starred in the Peaky Blinders feature film, The Immortal Man, which arrived in theaters in March. His return to the 28 Years franchise marks the first time his character will have a substantial narrative impact since the original 2002 film.
According to IGN Nordic, Boyle’s appearance at the festival was primarily to promote his latest directorial effort, Ink, but the status of the zombie franchise remained a point of high interest.
While a specific release date for the third film has not been announced, the completion of Garland’s script suggests that production could begin once scheduling for the lead cast is finalized. Boyle has not yet confirmed if he will return to the director’s chair for the finale or if another filmmaker will step in to conclude the trilogy.
