One of Ghana’s most famous singers, Shatta Wale, was arrested hours after claiming he was on the run for fear of his life.
He had posted on Facebook that his “life is in danger”.
Police accuse him and two others of “spreading false information” about an alleged gun attack on the reggae star.
Shatta Wale is best known for her collaboration with Beyoncé on her Lion King album, which has expanded her fan base across Africa and around the world.
The 37-year-old dancehall singer did not comment on the allegations against him.
In a Facebook post On Monday, the artist linked the threats to his life to “a false shepherd” who had prophesied on a local radio that he would be killed.
Police arrested him just hours after the message was posted, which caused a huge shock in Ghana.
“He was arrested for assisting police investigations for his alleged involvement in the creation and circulation of information intended to cause fear and panic,” a police statement said Tuesday.
Authorities warned that anyone caught sharing false information “capable of disturbing the country’s peace” would be prosecuted.
