Russell Crowe makes his return to Netflix today, September 25, 2026, with the debut of Unabomber, a dramatized psychological thriller that shifts the focus of the Ted Kaczynski case from a standard manhunt to an exploration of academic radicalization. The film marks a significant departure from previous adaptations by centering on the controversial psychological experiments conducted at Harvard University during the late 1950s.

Oscar winner Russell Crowe stars as Professor Henry Murray, the real-life academic who oversaw a series of brutal psychological tests designed to break the defenses of undergraduate subjects. Opposite Crowe, Jacob Tremblay portrays a 16-year-old Ted Kaczynski during his years as a mathematical prodigy at the university. This “origin story” structure seeks to examine how the unethical treatment Kaczynski experienced under Murray may have contributed to his later transition into a domestic terrorist.

The narrative alternates between Ted Kaczynski's time as a Harvard prodigy and the 1995 FBI manhunt.

The Dual-Timeline Structure

The film utilizes a dual-timeline narrative to connect the radicalization of the young math student with the eventual capture of the adult bomber. While the 1958 timeline focuses on the intense dynamic between Murray and Kaczynski, the 1995 timeline follows the final stages of the FBI’s search. Shailene Woodley co-stars in this latter sequence as FBI Agent Joanne Miller, the officer leading the effort to identify the bomber before another device can be detonated.

According to Netflix production details, the narrative is built around the contrast between the cold, intellectual environment of Harvard’s laboratories and the frantic, high-stakes investigation decades later. This structure allows the film to function as both a period piece and a modern procedural, though the “making of a monster” remains the central thematic anchor.

Critical Reception and Performance

Early reviews for Unabomber have highlighted the performances of the two leads as they navigate the film’s darker psychological themes. The Daily Beast and other outlets have noted that the chemistry between Crowe and Tremblay carries the 1950s sequences, portraying Murray as a sophisticated yet manipulative figure and Kaczynski as a vulnerable, isolated intellect.

For Tremblay, the role represents a transition into mature, R-rated material at age 19, moving away from the child-prodigy roles that defined his early career. The film’s emphasis on the Henry Murray experiments (which took place between 1958 and 1962) provides historical context that true-crime audiences often value, moving the conversation beyond the mechanics of the crimes to the possible psychological catalysts behind them.

Unabomber is now available for global streaming on Netflix.
