recently opened up about the 'disastrous' talks that ended his vision for a film.

Guillermo del Toro has officially closed the door on adapting video games for the big screen, citing a “contentious” and “disastrous” experience during past negotiations for a BioShock film. Speaking in late September 2026, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker confirmed that his involvement with the franchise ended so poorly that he has vowed never to attempt a video game adaptation again.

Del Toro revealed the details during an interview for the IGN30 Icons series, where he described a pivotal phone call that effectively killed his interest in the medium. While he declined to name the specific executives involved, he characterized the discussion as one of the most difficult of his career. According to the director, the friction during the BioShock talks served as a catalyst for his permanent departure from the world of gaming cinema.

The filmmaker’s objection to the genre is not merely personal but philosophical. Del Toro explained that the fundamental logic of video games—specifically the acts of “solving puzzles” and “assembling” components—does not translate to the narrative structure of film. He suggested that trying to force these interactive elements into a linear cinematic format creates a structural mismatch that he no longer wishes to navigate.

Del Toro argues that the 'puzzle-solving' nature of games does not translate to cinematic structure.

This definitive “never again” stance follows a history of high-profile gaming projects involving del Toro that failed to reach fruition, including the horror title Silent Hills and the original project inSANE. The director is currently at a career high, coming off a successful 2026 awards season where his film Frankenstein secured three Academy Awards, including recognition for its intricate set design.

While del Toro’s vision for Rapture will remain unproduced, the BioShock property is moving forward elsewhere. Netflix is currently developing its own adaptation, which has undergone significant changes since its initial announcement. Director Francis Lawrence remains attached to the project, working from a script by Michael Green.

Producer Roy Lee recently indicated that the Netflix production is eyeing an early 2027 start date for filming. The project was notably reconfigured in mid-2024 to move away from a massive $200 million price tag in favor of a more “personal” and contained budget. This shift aligns with broader industry trends toward more focused, character-driven adaptations of complex gaming lore.

For fans of the franchise, the contrast between del Toro’s discarded “disastrous” negotiations and the current Netflix trajectory highlights the long-standing difficulty of bringing BioShock to life. As Lawrence prepares for a 2027 production cycle, del Toro’s comments serve as a final confirmation that his unique, gothic take on the underwater city will never be realized.
