The Indian drug agency is questioning Bollywood actress Ananya Panday just weeks after arresting superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son for allegedly using recreational drugs.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) did not claim that his interrogation is directly related to Aryan Khan’s arrest.
He also did not clarify why Panday was called to his office in Mumbai for the second consecutive day.
Aryan Khan, 23, has denied the charges against him.
Ms Panday did not make any statements regarding the calling of the NCB to her.
Aryan Khan was disembarked from a cruise ship traveling from Mumbai to the state of Goa on 2 October. The NCB has accused him under the laws “relating to the possession, consumption and sale of illegal substances”.
His lawyer Satish Manshinde said there was “no evidence that he had used any drugs” and “no drugs were found in his possession”.
But on Wednesday a court in Mumbai he refused his bail for the second time. Her arrest and now the summons to Ms. Panday are dominating media headlines in India.
Some experts have criticized the excessive media “circus” on these cases. A former senior police officer told the BBC that these “young people are treated like criminals even before they have been found guilty.”
“Putting them off in front of the media as criminals doesn’t help anyone and this circus has to stop,” he said.
Many Bollywood actors and TV personalities have been scrutinized since last year in what appeared to be an investigation into claims of widespread drug use in the Hindi film industry.
In 2020, the narcotics agency questioned at least four actresses, including Deepika Padukone, but none were charged with any wrongdoing.
They also arrested actress Rhea Chakraborty in September last year on suspicion of buying drugs for her actor boyfriend, Sushant Singh Rajput.
On June 14, 34-year-old Mr. Rajput was found dead in his apartment. Police at the time said he had taken his own life. But the case took an unexpected turn when her family accused Ms. Chakraborty of complicity in the suicide, sparking months of media coverage and speculation.
Ms. Chakraborty, who had denied any wrongdoing, was released from prison one month after her arrest.
