The thirteenth season of Doctor Who began with the destruction of the universe. In fact, at the beginning of Doctor Who: Flux, the title threat emerged as a massive swarm of cosmic proportions destroying everything in its path. In the first of the season, it destroyed entire planets and killed billions. But perhaps most surprising about the destructive force was that it did not appear to be coming from anywhere. The Doctor did not know about the flu until he heard about Karvanista.
With only a tiny part of the universe left, the Doctor tried to stop the Flow and find out what it was. In the last episode, we finally find out who is behind it: Division.
When the Doctor first heard about the Flow, he had no idea what it was or what kind of damage it had done. The big question about destructive power was: what exactly could it be? Is the river a natural event, a deadly force in the universe? Was it a doomed sentient crush? Or is it designed in some way? That answer came in chapter three: Once, when the Doctor was briefly transported to a spaceship, where he met an older woman who told her that Flux was a weapon.
In Chapter 5: Survivors of the Flow, the Doctor is taken to the ward headquarters, where he meets this older woman again. This woman is Tecteun, the Lord of the Times, who adopted the Timeless Child when she first entered this universe. She is the last division director left. Tecteun explains the division’s true purpose: they have secretly monitored and modeled events in time and space, all over the world. However, the Doctor’s signs of hope and inspiration are a problem for them. With Flow, they have decided to obliterate the universe and continue their mission into the next galaxy.
As it turns out, the division is almost a success. Only a tiny part of the universe, with the world at its center, remains protected by Armada Lupari. But soon, the power clears up what is left. Fortunately, the Doctor seems to be finding a way to stop the destructive force. Still, the arrival of Swarm and Azure is disturbing. With only one episode left in Doctor Who: Flux, Doctor runs in time to stop the title threat. But while it may save the remnants of the universe, the damage from the river cannot be repaired.
