Cheats and Capullo’s We Have Demons reflect Supernatural’s largest trope

Snyder & Capullo's We Have Demons Mirrors Supernatural's Biggest Trope

The ComiXology Originals We Have Demons series has a lot in common with CW’s Supernatural. Similar to how Winchester chased the creatures of the night in the show, this book focuses on Lam, a young girl who inherits her father’s cloak as a demon hunter. While training to continue his family legacy, he finds a Sam and Dean-like network in We Have Demons # 2 and builds a story that reflects Supernatural’s biggest recurring problem.

In this part of Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, Dave McCaig, and Tom Napolitano, we meet Lam Gus, his father’s ex-partner, who is a supernatural Hulk. In this universe, when creation took place, two substances were projected on Earth: Halo, which can be used to exploit light, and Horn, a dark sense that transforms humans into demons, a duality similar to Dark Nights. : DC Death Metal.

Gus was infected with the latter, but Kassel, Lam’s father, saved him by putting a halo on a helmet, enabling him to fight evil. Cashel has since expanded its network, but the years have decimated it. Kassel eventually bowed as a shepherd to protect her daughter after the death of her mother, Kathryn. Lam also lost her arm when she tried to play Gus’s Halo as a child, but now Gus is training her to use her robot arm after Cashel’s death in the first issue.

The arm has a halo blade, a nod to Cashel’s name on the team, Blades. Gus and his ally train Lam on a mission reminiscent of Winchester’s and other hunter-gatherer monsters such as werewolves, vampires, and other nocturnal creatures.

The heroes of We Have Demons later make a huge mistake when the crew returns to Lam’s cabin after being attacked by a plane. They destroyed the demons that killed Kassel but are now trying to determine if they have a demonized spy in their camp. Unfortunately, Kassel’s body rises from her coffin and attacks her. He is ready to make Gus and Lam go to hell in a move that has happened again and again in the supernatural.

In Supernatural, John is taken over by Azazel, where Sam and Dean must kill their father or find a way to save his soul. It also looks like Alastair used John as a puppet and waved him off to be chased by the boys in later seasons. But by drawing on John’s fate repeatedly, this plot point became a predictable aspect of the series that surpassed its reception.

While We Have Demons has only just begun, the same idea seems spontaneous here. He plays with an emotional connection between Lam and his father, which does not have to be entirely resolved yet. Even with Gus in the middle, this point feels spontaneous. It inadvertently captures an idea that Supernatural and many similar stories have ruined.
