Developer Vidit Bhargava has unveiled “Duo-Man,” a specialized application that transforms the upcoming iPhone Duo into a functional simulation of a classic Sony Walkman. The app leverages the physical hinge of Apple’s first foldable smartphone to recreate the tactile experience of using 1980s-era cassette hardware.

The software is built specifically for the dual-screen mechanics of the device. Users interact with the application by unfolding the iPhone Duo to reveal its 7.6-inch internal display, which acts as the cassette deck where virtual tapes are “inserted.” Upon closing the device, the music interface migrates to the 5.4-inch outer display, mimicking the windowed look of a portable tape player. This use of the hinge as a functional bridge between digital files and analog-style interaction has positioned the project as a notable example of software designed for foldable utility.

The app features high-fidelity visual and audio recreations of 1980s-era tape hardware.

To enhance the realism of the simulation, Bhargava incorporated authentic audio samples recorded from physical Walkman units. The experience includes the mechanical “clunk” of physical buttons being pressed and the characteristic background hiss associated with magnetic tape.

While Duo-Man began as a development project, Bhargava confirmed that a full public release is in progress. The app’s release is expected to align with the hardware launch of the iPhone Duo. Apple’s foldable is currently scheduled for a retail release on October 23, 2026, with a starting price of $1,999. Pre-orders for the device are set to open on October 16.

The development of Duo-Man highlights an emerging trend of “analog mimicry” in foldable software, where developers use the physical movement of the device to ground digital interactions in familiar, nostalgic mechanics. By treating the hinge as a literal door for a cassette compartment, the app provides a specific use case for the foldable form factor beyond simple screen expansion.
