Sir David Amess: MP’s funeral will be held in Westminster Cathedral

The funeral of Conservative MP Sir David Amess will be held in Westminster Cathedral next month, it was confirmed.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales, will preside over the service on November 23.

The details were confirmed to parliamentarians, colleagues and staff attending Catholic functions in Parliament.

The Southend West MP was stabbed to death while meeting with voters in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex on 15 October.

Ali Harbi Ali, 25, from London, was charged with the murder of Sir David and the preparation of terrorist acts.

On 18 October, MPs attended a memorial service at St Margaret’s Church in Westminster to pay tribute to Sir David.

The Catholic deputy was married with five children.

At the time of his murder, a local priest, Father Jeffrey Woolnough, was prevented from entering the Belfairs Methodist Church to administer the sacrament of the sick, as it was a crime scene.

He said he felt compelled to delete his Twitter account after being accused of not doing enough to offer the dying congressman the last resort.
