Michael Gove: No 10 condemns anti-lockdown protesters for confrontation

Downing Street sentenced a group of protesters who confronted Michael Gove on the street outside his department.

Video footage circulating on social media shows the housing secretary harangued by anti-blockade protesters.

A spokesperson for No 10 said that “threatening and offensive language cannot be tolerated”.

Metropolitan police said no arrests were made, but they are looking at the footage that was posted online.

The force added that the incident occurred during a protest march its officers were escorting through Westminster.

A spokesperson for No 10 said: “It is unacceptable for those who disagree to target individuals. Their behavior is repugnant.”

“We expect the police to take this behavior seriously.”

The meeting tweeted: “We are aware of a protest in Westminster today that is marching in several locations.

“During this protest, a group attempted to surround a Member of Parliament on Horseferry Road.

“Our agents arrived immediately on the spot where they escorted him safely to a nearby building.

“There have been no arrests. We know there are videos circulating online about this incident, we will review this and the video worn by our agents to see if any crimes have occurred.”

The incident comes amid growing security concerns for lawmakers after Conservative MP Sir David Amess was stabbed to death in his Essex constituency last week.

A review by the Ministry of the Interior on parliamentary security arrangements launched after his death is expected to conclude in the coming days.
