HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us is preparing for its final act. HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed in September 2026 that the upcoming third season is being planned as the series finale, setting a definitive end for the prestige drama. Following a 2027 premiere on HBO and Max, the series will shift its perspective significantly to center on Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.
The narrative structure for Season 3 will mirror a pivotal segment of the source material, The Last of Us Part II. While Season 2 focused heavily on Ellie’s journey, the Season 2 finale, titled “Convergence,” concluded by rewinding the timeline to “Seattle Day One.” Season 3 will continue this “perspective-shift” format, following Abby’s three days in Seattle to provide a parallel view of the events depicted in the previous season.

Creative Shifts and a New Showrunner Dynamic
The production of Season 3 involves a notable change in the creative leadership. Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of the franchise, has stepped back from his role as co-showrunner to focus on his upcoming project at Naughty Dog, titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This leaves Craig Mazin to serve as the sole showrunner for the final season.
Despite the high-stakes narrative, Season 3 is planned as the final season, signaling that the network intends to conclude the story rather than expanding it into a fourth installment, a possibility Mazin had previously suggested. Directed by a team that includes Loki veteran Kate Herron, principal photography began in March 2026 and is scheduled to wrap in November 2026.
Major Casting Updates and ‘Meta’ Returns
The final season will introduce several high-profile actors to the ensemble. John Goodman has joined the cast in the role of Joey, and Patrick Wilson has been cast as Jerry, Abby’s father. There has also been a change to the established cast; Jorge Lendeborg Jr. will now play the role of Manny, replacing Danny Ramirez who left the project due to scheduling conflicts.

In a move that connects the television series more closely to its gaming roots, two original actors from the video games will appear in new, live-action roles. Laura Bailey, who famously voiced and performed the motion capture for Abby in the games, will portray Elizabeth, a leader within the Seraphite faction. Similarly, Ian Alexander, who originated the role of Lev in the games, will appear in the television adaptation as a character named Paco.
By centering on Abby’s perspective and introducing these “meta” casting choices, the final season aims to bridge the gap between the two versions of the story as it reaches its conclusion in 2027.
