Netflix is set to debut its highly anticipated limited series adaptation of East of Eden on October 1, 2026. The seven-episode production will be released in its entirety, marking the first time in seven decades that John Steinbeck’s sprawling family saga has been adapted for the screen in its full scope. Unlike the celebrated 1955 Elia Kazan film, which focused exclusively on the final third of the book, this new iteration follows the multi-generational histories of the Trask and Hamilton families from their origins.
The series stars Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, the complex and manipulative figure at the heart of the narrative. She is joined by Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask and Mike Faist as Charles Trask, centering the story on the volatile relationship between the two brothers. The production also restores the foundational history of the Trask patriarch, Cyrus, played by Tracy Letts, bringing the Civil War-era beginnings of the family’s legacy to the forefront.
A Family Legacy Restored
The adaptation carries significant personal weight behind the scenes, as it was written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, the granddaughter of the original film’s director. Having developed the project since 2020, Kazan’s script aims to fulfill a long-standing literary promise to capture the entirety of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. This includes the philosophical depth of the “timshel” concept—the Hebrew word for “thou mayest”—which explores the human capacity to choose between good and evil regardless of heritage.
The visual storytelling is split between two distinct directorial voices. Garth Davis helmed the first four episodes, establishing the initial world-building and the early years of the Trask family. The final three episodes were directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, guiding the series toward its generational climax in the Salinas Valley.
The supporting cast features a deep roster of established talent, including Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, the philosophical neighbor and friend to the Trasks. Hoon Lee portrays Lee, the Trask family’s intellectual housekeeper and moral compass, while Martha Plimpton appears as Faye. By including these characters and their respective subplots, the series moves beyond the focused domestic drama of previous versions to embrace the epic Western scale Steinbeck originally intended.
The series arrives on the platform globally on October 1, 2026. The simultaneous release of all seven episodes allows viewers to experience the full progression from the American East to the frontier of California in a single narrative arc.
