New Disney+ Pricing Structure Targets Standalone Subscribers with 50-Cent Bundle Incentive

New pricing for standalone streaming services narrows the gap between individual plans and bundles.

Disney has initiated its fourth price increase in as many years for its primary streaming services, implementing a fee structure that makes standalone subscriptions nearly obsolete. Effective September 23, 2026, for new subscribers, the updated pricing creates a “50-cent gap” between individual ad-free plans and the combined Disney+ and Hulu bundle, a move designed to funnel the user base into multi-service ecosystems.

The core of the strategy lies in the pricing of the Premium (ad-free) tiers. Both Disney+ and Hulu have seen their standalone monthly rates climb by $2.50, bringing each to $21.49. However, the Duo Premium bundle, which includes both services without ads, has only increased to $21.99. This pricing means that adding a second full streaming library costs a consumer only 50 cents more than maintaining a single standalone service.

The new fee structure makes standalone subscriptions nearly obsolete compared to the combined bundle.

This shift represents a significant escalation in the cost of ad-free entertainment. Since early 2023, the price of the ad-free Disney+ tier has risen roughly 96%, jumping from $10.99 to the new $21.49 rate. By pricing standalone services so close to the bundle, the company is effectively removing the financial incentive for customers to subscribe to just one platform.

The Rising Cost of Ad-Free Access

While the ad-free tiers are seeing the most aggressive changes, the entry-level plans are also being adjusted. The new pricing structure for major tiers includes:

  • Disney+ Premium (Ad-Free): $21.49 per month (up from $18.99)
  • Hulu Premium (Ad-Free): $21.49 per month (up from $18.99)
  • Disney+ & Hulu Bundle (Ad-Free): $21.99 per month (up from $19.99)
  • Standalone Ad-Supported Plans: $12.49 per month (up from $11.99)
  • Disney+ & Hulu Bundle (With Ads): Remains unchanged at $12.99 per month

The decision to keep the ad-supported bundle at $12.99 creates a stark $9 “ad-free tax” for users who wish to avoid commercials. This reflects a broader industry trend where streaming providers often generate higher average revenue per user (ARPU) through advertising than through mid-tier subscription fees alone.

A 50-cent difference now separates the cost of a single ad-free service from a two-service bundle.

Live TV and Multi-Platform Bundles

The price hikes extend into Disney’s more expensive live television offerings. Hulu + Live TV, which includes the ad-supported versions of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, is increasing by $10, moving from $89.99 to $99.99 per month. For those seeking even broader content libraries, the recently introduced bundle featuring Disney+, Hulu, and Max has also seen its ad-free price point rise to $34.99 per month.

Despite these increases, Disney has opted to keep the “Unlimited” sports bundles—which include the full ESPN direct-to-consumer application—at their previous rates of $35.99 (with ads) and $44.99 (ad-free). This stability in the high-end sports tiers suggests an effort to retain the volatile sports-fan demographic while extracting more value from general entertainment subscribers.

The timing of these increases coincides with a strategic pivot within the company. With Disney+ rapidly closing the price gap with competitors, the emphasis has clearly shifted from aggressive growth to long-term sustainability and per-user profitability.
