The current era of science fiction is defined by massive literary adaptations.

As of late 2026, the landscape of science fiction television is defined by massive budgets and a heavy reliance on acclaimed literary source material. While long-running pillars of the genre are reaching their final chapters, a new wave of adaptations is securing the future of the “Golden Age” of sci-fi. Apple TV+ has particularly emerged as a dominant force in this space, maintaining several high-concept series simultaneously.

The current television season is marked by several critical milestones. Apple’s Silo recently concluded its third season on September 4, 2026, and the production has already confirmed a fourth and final season is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2027. Meanwhile, the second season of Dark Matter is currently airing weekly episodes, with a finale set for October 30, 2026.

The Top 15 Sci-Fi Book-to-TV Adaptations

The following series represent the most significant and well-received adaptations of science fiction literature, ranging from current streaming hits to influential completed works.

1. Silo (Apple TV+)
Based on Hugh Howey’s Wool trilogy, this series has become a cornerstone of modern sci-fi. Following the conclusion of Season 3, the show is preparing to wrap its narrative in mid-2027. The production is praised for its intricate world-building regarding a community living in a 144-story underground silo.

2. Dark Matter (Apple TV+)
Adapted from the novel by Blake Crouch, who also serves as the showrunner, this series explores the multiverse through the eyes of a physicist kidnapped into an alternate version of his life. Season 2 premiered on August 28, 2026, and continues to expand on the reality-bending concepts of the book.

3. 3 Body Problem (Netflix)
This adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning trilogy is a major priority for Netflix. Following a successful first season, the platform confirmed that Season 2 will premiere in late 2026.

4. Foundation (Apple TV+)
Inspired by the seminal works of Isaac Asimov, Foundation concluded its third season in September 2025. As of September 2026, a fourth season is officially in development, continuing the multi-century saga of the Galactic Empire’s collapse.

5. The Expanse (Syfy/Prime Video)
Based on the novels by James S.A. Corey, The Expanse remains a benchmark for “hard” sci-fi. While the television series has concluded, the franchise continues to grow. A new sci-fi RPG game titled Osiris Reborn is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2027, and the authors are currently working on new television projects under the title The Captive’s War.

6. The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
Margaret Atwood’s dystopian vision is nearing its conclusion. The final season, Season 6, premiered on April 8, 2025, wrapping up the story of June Osborne and the regime of Gilead.

7. Murderbot (Apple TV+)
A newer entry to the genre, Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård as a self-aware security android. Based on Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, the first season premiered on May 16, 2025, and quickly found an audience for its blend of action and existential humor.

8. Station Eleven (HBO Max)
A limited series based on the novel by Emily St. John Mandel, this show focuses on the survivors of a devastating flu pandemic. It is frequently cited as one of the most artistic and emotionally resonant book adaptations in recent years.

9. Altered Carbon (Netflix)
Based on the Richard K. Morgan novels, this series explored the concept of “sleeves”—human bodies used as vessels for digitized consciousness. Though it ended after two seasons, its visual influence on the “cyberpunk” aesthetic remains significant.

10. The Man in the High Castle (Prime Video)
An adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s alternate history novel, the series imagined a world where the Axis powers won World War II. It was one of the first major hits for Prime Video’s original programming lineup.

11. Brave New World (Peacock)
This 2020 adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s classic novel updated the story for a modern audience, exploring themes of genetically engineered social hierarchies and the loss of individuality.

12. 11.22.63 (Hulu)
Based on Stephen King’s novel about a man traveling back in time to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, this limited series was praised for its period detail and faithful adherence to the source material’s tension.

13. Wayward Pines (Fox)
An earlier Blake Crouch adaptation, this series dealt with a Secret Service agent who finds himself trapped in a mysterious Idaho town. It served as a precursor to the current trend of high-concept literary sci-fi on television.

14. Under the Dome (CBS)
While it eventually diverged significantly from Stephen King’s massive novel, the early seasons of Under the Dome were a major ratings success, demonstrating the appetite for small-town sci-fi mysteries.

15. Neuromancer (Apple TV+ – Upcoming)
Rounding out the list is a highly anticipated project that aims to define the next year of the genre. The Neuromancer TV series, based on the foundational cyberpunk novel by William Gibson, is officially scheduled to premiere on January 22, 2027.

Shifting Strategies in Genre Television

The current era of science fiction has seen some high-profile shifts and cancellations as platforms refine their portfolios. While Silo and Foundation have seen continued investment, other projects have faced abrupt endings. The Power was officially canceled by Prime Video in April 2025, and MGM+ canceled Beacon 23 in late 2024 despite the production having filmed two seasons back-to-back. These movements suggest that while the “Golden Age” continues, networks are becoming increasingly selective about which massive literary worlds they choose to sustain.
