Capcom Price Strategy Outpaces Film Opening in Resident Evil Requiem Revenue Analysis

has maintained a strong player base on current-gen consoles since its early 2026 launch.

Since its launch in February 2026, Resident Evil Requiem has solidified its position as a major pillar of the franchise, moving approximately 8.5 million copies across PC and current-generation consoles. However, recent data surrounding the series’ latest cinematic reboot reveals a complex “transmedia paradox”: while the film broke box office records, it was Capcom’s own tactical price cuts—not the movie’s success—that had the most significant impact on recent game sales.

The film reboot, directed by Zach Cregger, debuted in September 2026 to a franchise-record $108.3 million worldwide. Starring Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier navigating the chaos of Raccoon City, the film consciously distanced itself from previous iterations of the series. While the theatrical success successfully reignited interest in the source material, the financial results for the game tell a more nuanced story.

The Transmedia Paradox: Players vs. Profits

Following the film’s opening weekend from September 18–20, Resident Evil Requiem saw a 20% surge in daily active users. This spike indicates that the film effectively drove players back to the ninth mainline entry. However, according to analysts at Alinea Analytics, daily revenue for the title on PlayStation 5 actually fell by 4% during that same period.

The discrepancy is attributed to Capcom’s “knife-to-price” strategy. The publisher initiated deep discounts on Resident Evil titles eight days before the film’s theatrical premiere. While this successfully funneled a massive volume of new and returning players into the game, the reduced price point offset the potential revenue gains typically expected from such a high-profile media crossover.

Platform Performance and Physical Media

The sales distribution for Resident Evil Requiem highlights a stark divide between platforms. PlayStation 5 remains the dominant home for the title, accounting for 48.1% of total sales. Steam follows closely with a 43.4% share, while Xbox Series X|S versions represent just 8.6% of the total volume. A video review of the title highlights the technical performance that has kept the player base engaged across these platforms since early 2026.

Physical media remains a significant factor for the franchise, particularly on the PlayStation 5.

Despite the industry’s broader shift toward digital distribution, physical media continues to hold a significant stake in the franchise’s ecosystem. On the PlayStation 5, physical copies account for 30.8% of the game’s total sales, suggesting that a substantial portion of the core audience still values tangible releases for major horror titles.

As Resident Evil Requiem continues its lifecycle, it remains in the shadow of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which serves as the series’ current revenue benchmark with over $600 million in lifetime earnings. Whether Requiem can surpass that milestone may depend more on Capcom’s ongoing promotional cadence than on the halo effect of future film projects.
