The film utilizes a dual-timeline structure to connect Ted Kaczynski’s 1950s college years with the 1990s FBI manhunt.

The biographical drama Unabomber debuted on Netflix on September 25, 2026, offering a psychological deep dive into the radicalization of Ted Kaczynski. Directed by Janus Metz, the film attempts to bridge the gap between Kaczynski’s early years as a math prodigy and his nearly two-decade campaign of domestic terrorism. However, its arrival has been met with a sharply divided critical response, largely centered on its efforts to provide a definitive “why” for his actions.

The film focuses heavily on controversial psychological experiments at Harvard in 1958.

The film utilizes a dual-timeline structure. It alternates between 1958 at Harvard University and the mid-1990s FBI investigation. This 100-minute, R-rated feature seeks to humanize the figure behind the “Unabomber” moniker by focusing heavily on his formative trauma rather than just the mechanics of the manhunt.

The Harvard Connection and the “Origin Story”

A significant portion of the narrative is set in 1958, featuring Jacob Tremblay as a 16-year-old Kaczynski. At this stage, Kaczynski is portrayed as a brilliant but socially isolated math prodigy. The film focuses on his participation in a series of unethical psychological experiments led by Professor Henry Murray, played by Russell Crowe. These real-life experiments involved intense verbal and psychological abuse designed to break down a subject’s ego.

The screenplay, written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, positions these experiments as the catalyst for Kaczynski’s later anti-technology philosophy and violent outbursts. While this provides a clear narrative arc, it has also become a point of contention. Critics have noted that this “origin story” approach risks oversimplifying Kaczynski’s path to terrorism by pinning it primarily on collegiate trauma.

The Manhunt and Fictionalized Elements

In the 1990s timeline, the film shifts toward a more traditional investigative thriller. Shailene Woodley stars as Agent Joanne Miller, the FBI operative leading the search for the elusive bomber. It is important for viewers to note that while the Harvard experiments and Murray are based on historical figures, Woodley’s character is a fictional composite created for the film’s narrative flow.

The 1990s timeline follows the investigation into Kaczynski’s secluded life in the Montana wilderness.

Michael Laurence portrays the adult Kaczynski in this timeline, capturing the hermit-like existence in the Montana wilderness. According to some early reviews, the constant shifting between the 1950s and 1990s creates a disjointed pace that complicates the film’s attempts to build tension.

Reception: Stream It or Skip It?

Despite the star power of Crowe, Woodley, and Tremblay, Unabomber has struggled to find favor with critics. The film currently holds a 33% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 48.

The primary criticism directed at the film is its perceived attempt to explain away Kaczynski’s crimes through his victimhood at Harvard. While some reviewers found the dual-timeline structure to be a thrilling departure for Netflix’s true-crime library, the broader consensus suggests the film fails to balance its character study with the gravity of the events it depicts.

For viewers interested in a dense character study with strong performances—particularly Tremblay’s portrayal of a fractured young genius—the film may be worth a stream. However, those looking for a historically rigorous account of the FBI investigation or a more traditional thriller may find the film’s speculative psychological focus and fictionalized lead agent to be significant drawbacks.
