Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill are set to reprise their iconic roles as River Song and Rory Williams for a new audio drama series, marking a significant reunion for the Doctor Who stars. Titled The Death and Life of River Song: River and Rory, the project is scheduled for release in February 2027 from Big Finish Productions.
The announcement comes exactly 15 years after the two actors first appeared together on screen in the 2011 episode “A Good Man Goes to War.” While their characters shared a complex familial bond—River Song was revealed to be Melody Pond, the daughter of Rory and Amy Pond—this new series explores a previously unseen chapter in their relationship. The audio drama is chronologically situated between the television episodes “The Wedding of River Song” and “Asylum of the Daleks,” a period when Rory was living in Birmingham during a temporary separation from Amy.
A Four-Part Family Reunion
The upcoming box set will consist of four distinct episodes: “Bog Man,” “Life Lessons,” “A Most Dangerous Game,” and “The Tashpa Stone.” The narrative focuses on the father-daughter dynamic in a setting removed from the Doctor’s direct influence. This “missing” era of Series 7 continuity allows for deeper exploration of Rory’s individual life and River’s interventions within it.
Fans can also expect familiar faces from the broader “Whoniverse.” Dan Starkey is confirmed to reprise his role as the fan-favorite Sontaran, Strax, appearing in the third episode of the set. In a meta-casting twist, Arthur Darvill’s mother, Ellie Darvill, has also joined the production to voice a character named Mrs. Walters.
Filling the Gap During the TV Hiatus
The return of these Series 6 and 7 favorites arrives at a transitional moment for the Doctor Who franchise. The BBC has officially launched a competitive tender process for the production of Season 16, signaling a major structural shift behind the scenes. With the television series currently targeted to return in 2028 or 2029, expanded media projects like the Big Finish audio dramas are becoming the primary source of new narrative content for the fandom.
While current Doctor Ncuti Gatwa’s era continues to develop, these legacy reunions serve as a bridge to the show’s past. By focusing on the 2011–2012 era, River and Rory taps into a period of high-concept storytelling that defined the Eleventh Doctor’s tenure. Though Karen Gillan is not currently billed to appear as Amy Pond in this specific set, the Birmingham-based setting provides a specific window into the Pond family’s history that remained largely off-screen during the original television broadcast.
