Prime Video is preparing for the next era of its superhero franchise with the 1950s-set prequel series, Vought Rising, which is positioned to anchor the expanding Vought universe.
Lead actor Jensen Ackles, who reprises his role as Soldier Boy, recently offered more specific timing for the debut. During a press event in May 2026, Ackles indicated that the series is aiming for an “early next year” release, suggesting a debut in the first quarter of 2027. The project has already completed its primary filming phase, with production wrapping in March 2026 after an eight-month shoot that began in August 2025. The series is currently in post-production and editing.
A Noir Origins Story
Set in 1950s New York City, Vought Rising explores the early, gruesome origins of the Vought corporation. Executive producer Eric Kripke has described the project as a “twisted murder mystery” with a distinct noir tone, likening the atmosphere to L.A. Confidential but with superheroes. The narrative is expected to reconcile the established lore of Compound V with the social and political climate of the mid-20th century.
The series reunites Ackles with Aya Cash, who returns as Clara Vought—the character fans know as Stormfront or Liberty. Their dynamic will serve as the central pillar of the prequel as they navigate the nascent days of corporate-sponsored “supes.” Paul Grellong serves as the showrunner for the series, overseeing its transition from the modern-day satire of the flagship series to a period-piece thriller.
Expanding the Vought Cinematic Universe
The arrival of Vought Rising comes at a pivotal time for the franchise. Following the cancellation of Gen V in April 2026 after its second season, the prequel now stands as the primary live-action spin-off of the franchise. To bridge the gap, the show is integrating characters that have ties to The Boys.
The cast for the prequel includes several new faces playing foundational figures in the Vought timeline:
- Mason Dye as Bombsight.
- Will Hochman as Torpedo.
- Elizabeth Posey as Private Angel.
By shifting the focus to a 1950s setting, the series allows the franchise to continue exploring its themes of power and corruption without the immediate narrative baggage of the main series. With production “in the can” and the editing process underway, Vought Rising is the first major step in Amazon MGM Studios’ strategy to maintain the property’s momentum.
