The arrival of the 2010 action sequel Resident Evil: Afterlife on Netflix this month has brought a specific bit of casting history back into the limelight. The film, which marks the franchise debut of Prison Break star Wentworth Miller, joined the streaming service’s U.S. library in September 2026, as part of a wider six-movie collection from the horror-action series.

The timing of the streaming release appears strategically aligned with the theatrical debut of the 2026 Resident Evil reboot directed by Zach Cregger. Since its premiere on September 18, 2026, the reboot has revitalized interest in the property, earning a 95% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

For fans of Miller, Afterlife offers a heavy dose of meta-irony. Miller portrays Chris Redfield, a staple protagonist from the video game source material. In a clear nod to his career-defining role as Michael Scofield, Miller’s character is first introduced in the film locked inside a high-security prison cell in Los Angeles. This “prison break” setup served as a primary marketing hook during the film’s original promotion, bridging the gap between his television fame and the blockbuster franchise.

At the time of its original release, Resident Evil: Afterlife was a significant technical milestone for the series. It was the first entry to be shot using 3D technology. According to data from The Numbers, the film went on to gross $300.2 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing installment of the original Milla Jovovich-led hexalogy at that point in time.

The film follows Alice (Jovovich) as she searches for survivors in a world ravaged by the T-virus, eventually teaming up with Miller’s Chris Redfield to take on the Umbrella Corporation in a ruined Los Angeles. While the film diverged significantly from the narrative of the Capcom games, it remains a favorite among fans of the “Paul W.S. Anderson era” for its stylized action and early-2010s aesthetic.

The addition of Afterlife to the Netflix catalog is part of a broader “Pay-1” licensing arrangement between Sony and the streaming giant. This deal has seen a total of six Resident Evil titles, including both live-action entries and animated features, arrive on the platform throughout September 2026, as reported by What’s on Netflix.

This coordinated push ensures that as Cregger’s new vision for the franchise dominates the box office, audiences can revisit the varied history of the series, including Miller’s brief but memorable stint as one of the video game world’s most recognizable heroes.
