Netflix is pivoting toward long-term franchises in its Japanese live-action library for 2027.

Netflix is pivoting its Japanese content strategy toward long-term franchises, with a 2027 slate defined by high-profile sequels and expansions of established global hits. This shift marks a move away from standalone limited series in favor of multi-season narratives and cinematic continuations of popular intellectual properties.

The upcoming lineup is headlined by the return of Ryo Saeba in a sequel to the 2024 action hit, alongside a new live-action entry in the Parasyte universe. These projects signal a deepening investment in Japanese-produced live-action adaptations that have previously demonstrated significant reach on the global Top 10 charts.

The Return of City Hunter

Following the successful debut of the live-action City Hunter film, Netflix has confirmed that a sequel is currently in development for a 2027 release.

While the first film was helmed by Yuichi Sato, the sequel will see a change in leadership. City Hunter 2 will be directed by Keiichiro Shiraki, who steps in to lead the next chapter of the “sweeper” mercenary’s adventures. The production aims to build on the action-comedy blend that made the original adaptation a breakout success in domestic and international markets.

Expanding the Parasyte Universe

Netflix is also doubling down on the Parasyte IP with a new Japanese live-action series titled Parasyte: Tamiya. Confirmed for a 2027 release, the series will star Shioli Kutsuna in a leading role. This production follows the success of the South Korean spin-off Parasyte: The Grey, but returns the franchise to its Japanese roots for this specific installment.

The series is expected to offer a fresh perspective on the lore established in Hitoshi Iwaaki’s original manga, focusing on the complex relationship between humans and the parasitic organisms that seize control of their hosts. The casting of Kutsuna, known for her roles in both Japanese and international productions, suggests a continued focus on talent with cross-border appeal.

Future Production Windows

Beyond the confirmed 2027 releases, Netflix is laying the groundwork for further seasons of its most popular gritty dramas. According to reported production schedules, filming for the second season of the sumo-themed drama Sanctuary is slated to begin in Fall 2026. This timeline indicates that while a 2027 release is possible, the series may stretch into 2028 depending on post-production requirements.

The push toward 2027 reflects a broader industry trend within Netflix Japan to secure talent and production space years in advance. By focusing on established brands like City Hunter and Parasyte, the streamer is prioritizing content with built-in audiences as it competes for viewership in the increasingly crowded live-action manga adaptation space.
