Spoiler alert! If you don’t want to know the outcome of the Great British Bake Off final, please look away now …
Giuseppe celebrated the win on Tuesday after what Channel 4 judges described as the closest finale ever.
The 45-year-old Bristol resident passed this year’s finalists Chigs and Crystelle, who all had to prepare the food for a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.
“There are no words, for once I’m speechless,” said the show’s first Italian winner.
In the final episode, he made a dough filled with chocolate and hazelnuts, shaped like a giant mushroom. It also made mango and passion fruit panna cotta, heart-shaped muffins of orange and figs, and caterpillar-shaped puffs filled with asparagus and peas.
Series 12 of the show initially saw a dozen bakers enter the Bake Off bubble at the start of the competition in September, before judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith lit them up with a series of 10-episode knockout challenges.
They set three tasks for the last three bakers: make a carrot cake, make Belgian sandwiches, and recreate a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, while showing off four different cooking disciplines.
The winner Giuseppe dedicated his victory to his parents. “All I can think about is my mother and father’s reaction,” she continued.
“The thing is, everything I’ve done to deserve this comes from him [my dad’s] heritage, is the best thank you note I can send him.
“He’s going through a very bad period from a health standpoint, so I think this is going to be a big boost.
“I don’t say often or lightly that I’m proud of what I do, but in this case I’m really proud of what I’ve done. It’s amazing!”
Italian work
Giuseppe’s success comes in the same year that his compatriots won Euro 2020 and Eurovision. “I feel it has been a great year for Italy,” he noted on the show.
“I really can’t believe it or believe it, it made me so incredibly happy to be an Italian. Dell’Anno is my surname which in English translates to” of the year “- and I feel this was definitely my year. “
Hollywood said it “did an amazing job”.
“The first time I entered the tent and in the first signature I saw his mini rolls, I thought he looked like our winner, you could see the heart and soul go into his cooking,” said the judge.
Fellow judge, Dame Prue, recently honored, added: “He’s such a classic and beautiful baker and represents a long tradition of classic Italian bakery. He’s done it brilliantly all the way.
“I go home to make a lot more Italian cakes because they are really good”.
