Chancellor Rishi Sunak was asked to “spend more time in the north” after confusing the names of two cities during a television interview.

The minister praised the “world famous Burnley Market” during a visit to Bury in Greater Manchester, 20 miles away.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said it’s “nice to know he’s very familiar with the north.”

The BBC contacted the Treasury for comment.

Mr. Sunak toured the country to conduct interviews following his budget announcement.

The mix-up came after BBC Breakfast presenter Ben Thompson told Sunak he was originally from Burnley, Lancashire.

“Pride in your home”

When he answered a question about the so-called government leveling program, he said, “It’s not just about being in the north, we’re here in Burnley, but if you grow up in a village in the southwest or even on the south coast, people they want to feel that the opportunity is there for them, wherever they are.

“I recognize two things. One is being proud of the place you call home.

“And a lot of what we announced yesterday, the leveling fund, is bidding like the Burnley Market, the famous Burnley Market, which benefits from £ 20 million in investment.

“It’s about improving the daily infrastructure of our communities.”

Burnham told BBC Radio Manchester that the Chancellor “probably needs to spend a little more time here” before joking about “Burnley’s famous black pudding”.

Labor leader of the Bury Council Eamonn O’Brien said: “We can forgive a mistake, but I am very generous here because they supported our plans.

“What I’d like to see, however, is the Chancellor, if he’s serious about leveling up, you can’t just do that with one-off projects.

“You can’t just throw money on a one-time thing.”

He added that the Chancellor needed to fix the local government’s finances and give the municipal services the money they needed.
