BBC Radio 1 presenter Adele Roberts claims she was “shined to be back” as she returned to the Weekend Breakfast show Saturday after her cancer surgery.

Roberts, 42, diagnosed with bowel cancer in early October, returned to the show a month after the surgery.

He said, “The good news is that they found the tumor … they took it away. My body is on the mend and I am here.”

“It’s a huge testament to the skill, knowledge and level of care at the NHS. They’re fantastic. I owe them my life.”

“I can’t thank them enough,” he added.

Roberts, who took a month off to recover, spoke candidly about her diagnosis and recovery when she opened the radio show on Saturday.

“I can’t believe it, it’s been a month since I had the surgery and I have goosebumps. A month later, it’s amazing what the body is capable of.

“I feel great. I’m lucky, I’m happy and can’t wait to go back.”

And let’s go! I missed you so much.

The former Big Brother star, from Southport, Merseyside, sought medical advice in October after struggling with his digestion “for a while.”

On Saturday’s show, he urged listeners to his show not to “suffer in silence” but to seek help with health problems.

“Go see your GP, that’s what I did and I think that’s why I’m here today. And I’m just so grateful.”

The DJ, who appeared in the reality TV show I’m a Celebrity in 2019, told about her convalescence on Instagram, including a selfie of her post surgery ostomy, admitting that the “roller coaster” prognosis and subsequent treatment had been “overwhelming at times.”

“Never underestimate the power of positivity and good wishes – it makes a difference, I promise you,” he told listeners on Saturday.

She said she nicknamed her stoma ‘Audrey’: “As my body heals from the surgery, I have a new little friend,” Roberts said.

“It’s kind of like a bum; while my old butt heals, I’m going to the front bathroom now,” explained the DJ.

“But don’t worry, it’s all over today!” he reassured the fans.

Roberts rose to fame after appearing on Channel 4’s Big Brother third series in 2002.

She joined the BBC in 2012 as part of the Radio 1Xtra team, before moving to Radio 1 in 2015 to host the Early Breakfast Show. It took over the Weekend Breakfast program earlier this year.

What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?

  • A persistent change in bowel habit – going thicker, with looser stools and sometimes belly pain
  • Blood in the stool with no other symptoms, such as hemorrhoids
  • Abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating always caused by eating – sometimes resulting in a reduction in the amount of food consumed and weight loss

Most people with these symptoms do not have bowel cancer, but the NHS advice is to see your GP if you have one or more symptoms and they persist for more than four weeks.

And if you, or someone you know, has been stricken with cancer, information and support can be found on the BBC’s Action Line page.
