A colorful cast of characters returned to the skies of New York on Thursday, delighting thousands who filled the streets for the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.
Baby Yoda, Snoopy and Papa Smurf were among the balloons spotted flying over the crowded streets of Manhattan, while at ground level, marching bands, performers and, of course, a turkey entertained the crowd.
It was a nice change from last year, when the public was banned from attending the 95-year-old event in person due to fears of Covid.
The Snoopy balloon, a fixture since 1968, is back on the parade.
The current version – an astronaut – is around 14 meters tall and has around 90 handlers.
Baby Yoda, who delighted fans in the Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian, was a new balloon for 2021. But he wasn’t the only one to debut: Pokémon characters Pikachu and Eevee also made their debut in couple.
The parade route traveled 2.5 miles (4km) through Manhattan, attended by over 8,000 protesters.
They were joined by cast members from numerous Broadway shows including Wicked, Six and Waitress. Party favorites were also in attendance the Rockettes.
This year, the artists had to be vaccinated and also wear a mask, even if they were there some face cover exemptions for some of those who sing and perform.
“This year, the parade is back in full swing,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said ahead of the event.
“It will be a great sign of our rebirth”.
